The “walk by rate” the amount of money you should leave on the ground and walk by because it will cost you more than your time to pick it up.
If a billionaire takes 10 seconds to pick up a $50 dollar bill, and it distracts them from focusing on the task that is making them $50,000 or they make the wrong decision because they were distracted by the $50 bill then they should walk by.
You and I have a much lower walk by rate or this is an opportunity cost, but it is still part of staying on task and making everything you do worthwhile. Even if it is distracting yourself so that you can relax and be ready to make better decisions, next time and opportunity comes along.
What is your walk-by-rate?
In some of the training platforms I see there is an option to go faster; play the video faster. This is wrong for a few reasons. Is the person getting to the point and delivering the material correctly or they just being pedantic? Are they building a scaffolding for your brain to learn the material? Do you need time to absorb the material that is being delivered?
Are they teaching or just delivering material?
Anyone can read a script, they are delivering material. Making something interesting that you are willing to play along and work through the problem so that you have a better understanding is much more subtle and difficult. That is teaching.
You should be tired if you’re actively engaging in learning material. You will need to take breaks as you are learning to either reflect on what is being said or take notes or even take a break.
So learn to learn better.
